Every year, Sikhs around the world gather to celebrate the Prakash Purab (birth anniversary) of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhi and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. This sacred occasion is a time for reflection, thanksgiving, and renewed commitment to the timeless teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, whose message of equality, compassion, and devotion continues to inspire millions across the world.

Born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan), Guru Nanak Dev Ji lived during a period of significant social, political, and religious division. From an early age, he challenged superstition, injustice, and discrimination, teaching that all human beings are equal in the eyes of the One Creator. His simple yet profound declaration:

"There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim,"

reminded people that spiritual truth transcends labels and divisions.

Central to Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings were three key principles:

Ç Naam Japna – remembering and meditating on God's name.

Ç Kirat Karni – earning an honest living through hard work.

Ç Vand Chhakna – sharing one's blessings with others, especially those in need.

These principles remain at the heart of Sikh life today. They encourage us to lead lives rooted in faith, honesty, humility, and service to humanity.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji travelled widely across Asia and the Middle East, spreading a message of love, peace, and unity. Through his travels, known as the Udasis, he engaged people from all backgrounds, encouraging them to seek truth through devotion, selfless service, and moral living rather than through empty rituals. His teachings emphasised that God resides within every person and that genuine spirituality must be reflected in our actions towards others.

Prakash Purab is traditionally marked by Akhand Paaths, kirtan programmes, katha, nagar kirtans, and the sharing of langar. Gurdwaras are beautifully decorated, and communities come together in a spirit of seva and fellowship. These celebrations are not only joyful commemorations of Guru Ji's birth but also opportunities to reflect on how we can embody his teachings in our daily lives.

In a world still affected by conflict, inequality, and division, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's message is as relevant today as it was over five centuries ago. His vision of a society based on justice, mutual respect, and the recognition of our shared humanity offers guidance and hope for all people, regardless of faith, nationality, or background.

As we celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Prakash Purab on 24th November 2026, may we recommit ourselves to the values he taught: remembering the Divine, serving others selflessly, speaking truthfully, and working towards the well-being of all. Let us honour Guru Ji not only through celebration but through our actions, ensuring that his light continues to shine in our homes, our communities, and our hearts.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji's timeless message remains simple yet transformative: recognise the Divine in all, live honestly, and serve humanity with compassion.

Gurpurab di lakh lakh vadhaiyan to all members of the Sangat. May Guru Nanak Dev Ji's blessings guide us all towards peace, wisdom, and Sarbat da Bhala.
